PQSS: Courses & Schedules
PQSS - Moraine State Park - Pittsburgh, PA
Race #2 - September 6, 2008 [Park Web Site] [Google Map]
The second stop in the Primal Quest Sprint Series brings racers to beautiful Moraine State Park. This former Hi-Tec venue is no stranger to adventure! Located approximately 30-45 minutes outside of Pittsburgh, this park is known for its gently rolling hills, lush forests and sparkling waters that disguise a land that has endured the effects of continental glaciers and massive mineral extraction. Each year over one million people visit the 16,725-acre park, yet never realize the efforts that helped restore the park from prior coal mining and oil and gas drilling practices.Â
The park’s main attraction, 3,225-acre Lake Arthur, is popular for many water activities. Lake Arthur provides over forty miles of scenic shoreline, and a paved seven-mile bike trail winds near the shoreline. Moraine State Park also offers many miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. Hiking opportunities in Moraine State Park are plentiful, where 28 miles of hiking trails wind through forests, fields and along the lake shore.
Moraine State Park offers a large site for the central race location at the area referred to as Lake View. This site will serve as the Start/Finish line, as well as a central spectator arena for family and friends to cheer teams on during the Log PT’s and the Climbing Obstacles. This unique design will again give friends, family and spectators an unprecedented amount of time to see and cheer on racers during the competition.
Participants will begin the race with a mass start from the transition area, then continue to one of the following segments:
- 13.5 mile bike leg on a combination of bike paths, powerlines, singletrack and gravel roads
- 6 mile scenic single track trail run over rolling hills
- 3.5 mile paddle in inflatable 2-person kayaks
- An optional orienteering course
- And before celebrating at the finish line, teams will partake in the infamous Log PT and will then climb up, over, under and through the Climbing Obstacles to the finish.
Post race, each participant will receive a certificate of completion and finisher’s award. Each participant will then be invited to stay and cheer on their fellow competitors, enjoy the camaraderie of the adventure racing family, and have a bite to eat to complete the day.
