Race Day Films has released the second video from the first Primal Quest Sprint Series event held in Pocahontas State Park, near Richmond, Virginia this past May. Check it out here.
After much deliberation, we have decided to reschedule the following Primal Quest Sprint Series Events:
Moraine State Park, Pittsburgh PA       September 6
US Whitewater Center, Charlotte NC Â Â Â Â October 4
We apologize for any inconvenience this rescheduling may cause, but we feel an official roll-out of the Series starting in 2009 will allow for greater coordination with host venues and more cohesive marketing opportunities for host organizations/local AR clubs.Â
Â
We’ll be making a broad announcement in the coming weeks and encourage you to sign up for the Primal Quest Mailing List to ensure you don’t miss important information about the Sprint Series and the 2009 Primal Quest Expedition Adventure Race.
We’re very excited about the direction the Sprint Series is headed and are confident the rescheduling of events will allow us to offer athletes an unparalleled racing experience.Â
Thank you for your flexibility and your continued interest in the Primal Quest Sprint Series!
The Primal Quest Sprint Series is proud to offer a 20% discount to all entrants who belong to a local outdoor athletic club. Members of cycling, mountain biking, triathalon, orienteering, or any other outdoor clubs are eligible for the discount by providing a copy of their membership card upon submission of their entry. Teams that sign up on-line at www.primalquestsprintseries.com will use their club discount code.
The PQSS is a series of shorter, faster adventure races designed by the same team behind the Primal Quest expedition length race. Teams of two compete in the traditional adventure racing disciplines of mountain biking, trail running, and paddling, with a few surprise events thrown in as well.
The Sprint Series launched in May with the first ever race taking place in Chesterfield, VA. In 2009, the Series will expand with more races tentatively scheduled as follows:
Miami - mid February
New Orleans - late March
Nashville - early May
Detroit - mid June
New York - late July
Pennsylvania - early September
Richmond - mid October
Atlanta - mid November
Top teams will earn points based on how they finish in the Sprint Series races, and at the end of the season, the team with the most points will be crowned the PQSS Champion. The winner of the Primal Quest Sprint Series will earn themselves an automatic entry into the 2010 Primal Quest Expedition Race. For more information regarding the PQSS, contact Dave Poleto at dave.poleto@primalquestsprintseries.com.
In recognition of all their hard work in Montana at the 2008 Primal Quest, the management and staff would like to extend an invitation to all the PQ volunteers to take part in two Primal Quest Sprint Series races free of charge.
The Primal Quest Sprint Series are shorter, faster races, lasting 4-6 hours, but still incorporating all the traditional adventure racing disciplines such as trail running, mountain biking, and paddling. But the PQSS also has it’s own unique events, such as cargo net climbs, rope bridges, optional orienteering, and the grueling SEAL “log PT”, brought to you courtesy of Don Mann.
Mark your calendars and prepare yourself for an event like no other. Registration opens July 15th for the Blackwater Escape and Evasion Adventure Race, scheduled to take place November 7th- 8th in Moyock, North Carolina.
Brought to you by Blackwater Extreme Racing and Don Mann Productions, the Blackwater E&E is unlike any other adventure race on the planet. This 24-hour race will test teams of two against one another as they run, mountain bike, paddle, swim, and climb their way across a challenging course designed to test them at every turn. Along the way, they’ll face the Blackwater obstacle course, the infamous SEAL team “log PT”, an optional orienteering course, and a few other surprises that could only come from Blackwater and the team behind Primal Quest, the “World’s Most Challenging Human Endurance Competition”.
The Blackwater Escape and Evasion adventure race is prefect for triathletes, endurance athletes, military personnel, police officers, firefighters, or anyone else looking to add a little adventure and challenge to their life. For more information and to register, go to http://blackwateree.com/.
If you are a good navigator, you can write your own ticket in the sport of Adventure Racing. Your race calendar will be full before you know it, with invites from some pretty solid teams. But navigation is a mix of art and science that needs to be practiced continually, so your best bet is to hook up with a local orienteering team (most of the sport’s best navigators have a competitive orienteering background) and see how good you can get! Plus, learning to navigate is just darn fun.
Here’s the quick down low on what you need to know to get from point A to point B while navigating. Make sure you have all of your DATAH before leaving for that next checkpoint!
GoPro and Primal Quest present the “Be a HERO…GoPro” Primal Quest Adventure Race Video Contest. GoPro will award the winning team $1000 cash and four complete GoPro camera bundles with accessories as a reward for most viewed video. Videos will be 2 minutes or less and posted on YouTube.com and Active.com.
GoPro’s wearable sports cameras will be distributed on loan to teams during the registration process. Memory cards (sponsored by Kingston) and batteries (sponsored by Energizer) will be swapped out at predetermined TA’s.
Teams are encouraged to participate in this opportunity to compile footage during the event to promote the excitement that is adventure racing. Filming with GoPro’s wearable sports cameras during the race will enable athletes to share their personal Primal Quest experiences with friends and family.
GoPro’s cameras and resulting videos also represent an excellent tool for use in obtaining team sponsors and generating non-participant interest in adventure racing.
Contest Details:
Footage from each team will be edited and uploaded to YouTube.com and Active.com by volunteers after the event. The winning video will be determined by the highest number of viewings on YouTube.com during the specified time period ending 9/1/08.

I want to personally thank you for either taking time out of your busy schedules to come out and support Primal Quest Montana; or for having expressed an interest in doing so. We are all very grateful for your devotion to this sport, to PQ, and to creating an event that will change many lives, including yours! Primal Quest volunteers are widely known as being the most dedicated and experienced in the industry, and we truly owe the success of our events to you! One of the most frequent compliments we receive from competitors is how impressed they are with the professionalism and hard work of our volunteers.
My involvement with producing adventure races dates back to 1997. During that time we have produced hundreds of multi-sport events and have built, in my opinion, the most experienced AR team (staff and volunteers) in the world. For the most part, our staff all started as volunteers. Many of our best volunteers who had the desire, time and willingness to do more joined our staff ranks. If you have an interest and the time and would like to be more involved with Primal Quest and the Primal Quest Sprint Series, please be sure to let me know. Both PQ and the PQSS are going to expand and we are looking for some more great talent to join us for this expansion.
Don D. Mann
Director
Primal Quest Expedition Adventure Race
A Don Mann Production
The Blackwater: Escape and Evasion Adventure Race was announced just a few days ago, and already it’s building buzz in the AR community. Mike Bitton from CheckPointZero.com has written an excellent article about the event after speaking with Primal Quest CEO Don Mann who is managing this new race. The article takes a peek at what we can expect out of the Blackwater E&E and explores the potential role of Erik Prince, the founder of Blackwater Worldwide, in the future of adventure racing.
The following is an excerpt from the article:
Don Mann, former U.S. Navy SEAL and the CEO of Primal Quest, is an adventure racing entrepreneur with an unusually rich history. During his decades as an “operator” on the Teams, Mann did countless things he can’t tell anyone. But here’s a little something he told me. Adventure racing has a new prince. And it’s a prince with a capital P.
Back when Mann was on duty at SEAL Team 2, prepping to lead fellow sailors through a Raid Gauloises expedition adventure race, he was approached by a member of SEAL Team 8, one Erik Prince, about what essentially amounted to a sponsorship for Mann’s adventure racing team. Prince liked the concept, Mann said, of a SEAL Team competing on a global stage. And, lucky for Mann and his AR teammates, Prince had just come in to some money. “He wrote me a check on the spot,” Mann recalled. The men have been friends ever since.
